Staff Decision Making

Staff Decision-Making

At JJSE, we believe that real accountability happens when the people who are doing the work have the authority to decide how it gets done, and are then responsible for the outcomes. Consequently, we follow the principle articulated by Emiliano Zapata:

“La tierra es de quien la trabaja."
("The land belongs to those who work it.")*

In other words, as much as possible decisions should be made by those who are implementing them. When a decision affects the whole staff, then a committee makes a proposal based on input, and then brings it to the staff for consensus.

Below are key decision-making groups at JJSE and their areas of responsibility:

School Site Council
12 elected members: 3 students, 3 parents, 6 staff + Co-Directors as staff to SSC
- supervising and evaluating the co-directors (including hiring & firing)
- reviewing and approving big-picture SFUSD and grant budgets
- reviewing and approving strategic goals and major policies

Co-Directors
2 Co-Directors
- directing day-to-day operations
- supervising and evaluating staff (see org chart), and making personnel decisions involving existing staff
- proposing SFUSD and grant budgets for approval by the SSC, and making day-to-day adjustments to SSC-approved budgets
- proposing strategic goals and major policies to the SSC
- leading school culture work, including student discipline
- leading academics and professional development work
- community & district relations, including fundraising

Program Staff
Wellness, After School, Arts, Athletics, College Access
- making day-to-day decisions and managing budgets within their program areas, with support and supervision from Co-Directors

Academic Equity Committee
Curriculum Leads from all curriculum teams , Co-Director
- setting policy and making decisions around all areas of curriculum, instruction, assessment (including the portfolio system), master schedule, video PD, and teacher support & evaluation
- leading professional development in these areas
- overseeing budgets in these areas
- decisions that can be made by individual curriculum teams should be made by them

School Culture Committee
Family Leads from JI, SI, and Exceptional Ed, Wellness Coordinator, Co-Director
- setting policy and making decisions around all areas of school culture including Advisory curriculum, student discipline, student recruitment, parent relations, and intersession
- leading professional development in these areas
- overseeing budgets in these areas
- decisions that can be made by individual Family teams should be made by them

Ad Hoc Committees
established as needed on a temporary basis
- getting input and developing proposals on issues that do not fall into one committee’s area of responsibility (e.g., Hiring Committees, Schedule Committee, etc.)

Whole Staff
all JJSE staff
- reaching consensus on major decisions affecting the whole school (not including personnel and budget), based on proposals which have already been vetted by a committee
